What The Bible Says About Relationships

There are "friends" who destroy each other,
but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.
Proverbs 18:24

Friends

Proverbs 13:20
Whoever walks with the wise will become wise; whoever walks with fools with suffer harm.

Philippians 2:3-4
Don't be selfish; don't live to make a good impression on others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don't think about your own affairs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing.

Injustice

1 Peter 2:16-18
But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak evil against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong! Christ also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

1 Peter 5:10-11
In his kindness God called you to his eternal glory by means of Jesus Christ. After you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. All power is his forever and ever. Amen.

Love

John 15:9-16
I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey me, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father and remain in his love. I have told you this so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, you joy will overflow! I command you to love each other in the same way that I love you. And here is how to measure it - the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends. You are my friends if you obey me. I no longer call you servants, because a master doesn't confide in his servants. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn't choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

1 John 4:9-21
God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love. It is not that we loved god, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No other has ever seen God, but if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love has been brought to full expression through us. And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. All who proclaim that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in him. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgement, but we can face him with confidence because we are like Christ here in this world. Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of judgment, and this shows that his love has not been perfected in us. We love each other as a result of his loving us first. If some says, "I love God," but hates a Chistian brother or sister, that person is a liar; for if we don't love people we can see, how can we love god, whom we have not see? And God himself has commanded that we must love not only him but our Christian brothers and sisters, too.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7, 13
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance....There are three things that will endure - faith, hope, and love - and the greatest of these is love.

Marriage

Ephesians 5:21-22, 25-28
And further, you will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. You wives will submit to your husbands as you do to the Lord...And you husbands must love your wives with the same love Christ showed the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God's word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man is actually loving himself when he loves his wife.

1 Peter 3:1-7
In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands, even those who refuse to accept the Good News. Your godly lives will speak to them better than any words. They will be won over by watching your pure, godly behavior. Don't be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. That is the way the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They trusted God and accepted the authority of their husbands. For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, when she called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do. In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat her with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God's gift of new life. If you don't treat her as you should, your prayers will not be heard.

Matthew 19:5, 9
And he said, "This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one."...And I tell you this, a man who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery - unless his wife has been unfaithful."

Mark 10:10-12
He told them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else, commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorices her husband and remarries, she commits adultery."

Parents and Children

Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. "Honor you father and mother." This is the first of the ten commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promis: If you honor your father and mother, "you will live a long life, full of blessing." And now a word to you fathers. Don't make your children angry by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction approved by the Lord.
