Moist Heat Pack
The following is a recipe for making a moist heat pack I got from a therapist at my doctor's office when I was having back problems. This moist heat pack is reusable indefinitely. You will notice a mild rice odor with the initial uses. Store in a dry place.
To Make: Pour 4 cups of long grain rice (dry) into a men's size tube sock. Knot or sew the end closed. Place this sock, knot end down, inside of another tube sock. This one can remain open or knotted. With use the outer sock may become soiled. Remove, and wash/dry it as needed.
To Use:
Heat the rice pack in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes on HIGH. Individual microwaves heat differently so it make take several uses to select the best heating time to meet your needs. Use at least one towel layer between the pack and your skin. Place the pack on the body area that requires most heat. This pack will provide 15 to 20 minutes of deep moist heat.
Precautions:
1. Never heat the pack for more than 3 minutes prior to use.
2. Always check the skin under the pack every few minutes and remove if excessive redness occurs.
3. Never place the pack on skin that has poor sensation for temperature.
4. Never place the pack on body areas with swelling (edema).
