Red Velvet Cake

Cake:
1/2 cup Crisco
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces red food coloring
3 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour, sifted 3 times
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon soda dissolved in 1 tablespoon vinegar

Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten eggs. Make paste of coloring and cocoa. Add to creamed mixture. Add vanilla, salt and flour alternately with milk. Fold in vinegar and soda mixture. Bake at 350 degrees until done. When cooled, cover with Waldorf Icing.

Waldorf Icing:
3/4 cup milk
5 tablespoons flour
Dash of salt
3/4 stick butter
1/2 cup Crisco or less
2 cups sugar or more
2 teaspoons vanilla

Cook milk, flour and salt over low heat until thick. Chill. Cream Crisco, butter, sugar and vanilla. Add to cooled mixture. Beat until smooth. Spread on cake.
